Welcome to the Portland Public Library

Founded in 1867, the Portland Public Library serves the city of Portland and the surrounding Greater Portland area. It is the Area Reference & Resource Center for the Southern Maine Library District, and is one of the largest libraries in the state.

The Portland Public Library system comprises of four locations: the main library, in downtown Portland, and three other neighborhood libraries, one of which is on Peaks Island.

The Library's main location contains the Portland Room, which holds the Portland Public Library's Special Collections. Most of the Library's holdings of historic value are kept in this location.
